THE PROJECT

The unseen influence of water is directly linked to our wellbeing.  Being on or around the element of water, under the sun and in the salt air goes along way towards better physical & mental health.

The Veteran Maritime Warrior Project is mostly a self funded social enterprise delivering options to benefit our warriors,  no matter where they are in life.

Current serving members of the ADF who are on a rehabilitation program can access all areas of our program through the 'ADFRP Meaningful Engagement' initiative.  Defence can fund up to $3500 for members to attend our Maritime Warrior wellness and upskill package.

To enhance both resilience and rehabilitation in the ADF, Maritime Warrior has designed programs specifically for defence in mind.  Our goal is to promote psychological resilience and also increase physical, cognitive and emotional health when dealing with rehab cases.

Our programs are tailored to deliver on Resilience, Adventure Training and Meaningful Engagement.  The project is based around our commercially registered and insured ocean going 43ft x 15ft sailing yacht.

LOCATION & SAFETY

We're based out of the Sunshine Coast, Australia.   Our cruises and training all vary, depends on the guests, if motor cruising or sailing, if we're on the Ocean, Moreton Bay or the flat waters of the river or Gold Coast Broadwater.  We firm up our activities when we understand who's coming onboard.  The key to success is to be flexible and adjust as the competence, confidence, mental and physical limitations of all parties involved are taken into account in order to remain safety within our safety matrix.

UNWIND & RESET

It's well recognised that the outdoors in particularly being around water provides for a range of cognitive, physical and emotional therapy for people.

Sounds of water, "waves can help you achieve a meditative state which is proven to heal and strengthen your brain.  These slow, whooshing noises are the sounds of non-threats, which is why they work to calm people."  says Orfeu Buxton, an associate professor of biobehavioral health.  "It's like they're saying: "Don't worry, don't worry, don't worry."

Salt air, when your lungs are filled with it, your brain receives an instant benefits.  The negative ions in the ocean air can actually help calm your brain.

Grounding, otherwise known as going barefoot, has been proven to have a number of stimulating benefits to our bodies and minds. The reason is that our feet contain a rich network of nerves and acupuncture points.  Our feet are able to absorb free ions on the earth surface in much the same way that our lungs are able to absorb ions in the air.

The Blues, studies have shown that different colours often produce different psychological, emotional, and physical effects. The colour blue, for instance, is often used in marketing material to convey a sense of calmness. The Global Healing Center advises individuals to actually surround themselves in blue as a way to reduce stress.

According to Richard Shuster, PsyD, clinical psychologist, he agrees that blue has a profound calming effect on people. "Staring at the ocean actually changes our brain waves' frequency and puts us into a mild meditative state," says Shuster

Maritime Warriors are invited to sail with us for the above reasons on any of our tourism cruises by entering their unique ID number in the 'coupon' section of our online booking system.  They'll receive a free ticket aboard anytime they need to unwind and recharge.

Families are often forgotten as a result of our time in the services, their own sacrifice is always difficult to understand and measure.  The support to us never needs to be forgotten, we believe you need quality time together to keep a family together.

To promote a positive family experience the Maritime Warrior Project encourage families to accompany their warrior onboard.

To encourage more involvement in the Project, those veterans who find an interest in what we offer after a day cruising can get some boat training and licence or even join our 'Upskill Program' and or become crew.

If the UNWIND & RESET program interests you head to the Joining Page and register.

GET A BOAT LICENCE

Recreational Power Boat & Personal Water Craft

What's poised to be an exciting venture, we're bringing to market a boating school where other veterans and the general public can be taught by true professionals, all ex-Military, Police, Fire, Ambulance or Border Force Officers.

Our Maritime Warrior Training School will be a magnet to people wishing to be taught by instructors who have come from a rigid, disciplined learning and teaching environment themselves.  Our people have all had careers in helping others.
We're not an online course provider that does a quick lap in a boat then throw you your licence type of organisation.  We're here to teach people safe boating through practical training.

Veterans who find an interest in what we do through the 'Get a Boat Licence' program are encouraged to join the growing team to 'UPSKILL' and crew the yacht.

If you're
interested in a licence course head to the Joining Page and register.

THE UPSKILL PROGRAM

Coxswain & Master <24m

Maritime Warriors who join the Up Skill Program have an amazing opportunity to gain formal qualification in the marine sector through our partnered RTO's.

We'll assist you in navigating the pathway of becoming a Coxswain which is the most common commercial qualification in the sector and take command of commercial vessels up to 12m long.   If you desire to skipper larger vessels you can continue to become a Master <24m,  skippering vessels up to 24m long (75ft).

To be awarded the above qualifications, warriors will need to complete the Marine Radio and Elements of Shipboard Safety Courses, gain or prove qualifying sea time.

The massive advantage is that you'll be clocking up qualifying sea time during working and training on 'The Lady' a commercially registered ocean going yacht operated through our Social Enterprise.  Crew will have the opportunity to rotate through the casual positions on the yacht during corporate bookings and charters.  If the positions are fully rostered you're still welcomed on board as a volunteer to assist, this will also go towards your sea time.

Warriors could start work from day 1 as crew with no prior experience  with the proviso an induction and crew safety brief are completed before departure.  Within a short period of time we'll ensure you attain your Elements of Ship Board Safety Course to comply with maritime law.

If the UPSKILL program interests you head to the Joining Page and register.

Boat & Jetski Instructor

Helping others learn new skills and  becoming better models of themselves is a powerful self-worth tool in itself.

As the Maritime Warrior attains their commercial qualifications they can join the schools instructor pool and pass their knowledge on while attracting a wage.

3rd PARTY CREW

Opportunity exists where Maritime Warriors are invited on numerous vessels ranging from sail to powered yachts.

It's well recognised that ex defence can take and follow direction and use their initiative hence we receive numerous requests from skippers looking for crew.  Skippers often need crew to help relocate a vessel on behalf of a client.

Yacht owners who see the worth in the project also invites us abroad to assist crewing, owners get great benefit in giving and sharing their passion with others.  Opportunities also open up  where solo owners are looking for crew to help share the load while on an adventure around the Great Barrier Reef or to a Pacific Island (have your Passport ready).

Invites range from crew having no experience and up.  Adventures may be domestic or international, you may get flights internationally then relocate a vessel home, you my get all expenses paid and or be paid.

The opportunities are unlimited while accruing valuable sea-time and gaining experience.

If 3rd PARTY CREW peaks your interest head to the Joining Page and register.
